“I won’t be your beast of burden”

(Jagger/Richards)

Mick and Keith may refuse to be anyone’s beasts of burden, but the sad fact is that throughout the millennia many of God’s children have had their backs and hearts broken spiritually by heavy religious loads placed on them by those claiming to speak for God.

Jesus denounced this practice in His teaching and yet it continues to this day.

Mat 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Mat 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
Mat 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
Mat 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Someone has said that just as Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:5) so also the Pharisees. Those who would take advantage of the people of God are still amongst us today.

Unfortunately many people think that their attempts to please these self styled apostles, prophets and gurus who usurp the authority of Moses are necessary in order to please God. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Jesus Christ came to remove burdens not to turn humanity into pack animals to serve a spiritually elite class.

Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus put himself above no one. Pleasing God is not about heavy burdens and a harsh yoke of religious observances.

John Wesley said it well:

For my yoke is easy - Or rather gracious, sweet, benign, delightful: and my burden - Contrary to those of men, is ease, liberty, and honour.

Peace to you in the name of Jesus.
